A classic American car that gets better with time, the Chevrolet Impala is a hit with everyone from families to law enforcement. Since 1958, the Impala has been a staple of the American automotive scene. Now in its tenth generation, the Impala continues to offer drivers classic style, impressive performance and premium features.
Initially introduced in 1958 as the Bel-Air Impala, the Chevrolet Impala was available in both sport coupe and convertible models and offered standard with a V8 engine. The Impala was sporty and sleek, rocking a head-turning design that made it a classic from the start. The following decade brought three new generations of the Impala which came in a wide range of options and included multiple engine options (eight at one point), new four-door body styles and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
Throughout the ‘60s, the Impala’s design was refined, yet it still retained its muscular design. With the fourth generation starting in 1965, a luxury version of the Impala was introduced, called the Caprice as well as a six-cylinder engine option. Another notable update to the Impala during the ‘60s was the Impala Super Sport trim (better known as "SS") that gave drivers multiple design and performance options.
The Impala continued to be a bestseller in its fifth and sixth generations, undergoing multiple redesigns in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Those changes brought that eye-catching fastback body styles and better safety features. During this time, the Impala also began to be widely used as both a law enforcement vehicle and a taxi car.
The Impala’s run came to an end in 1985, however, in 1994, it made a comeback as the Impala SS. Offered as either a sedan or a station wagon and powered by a beefy small-block V8 engine, the Impala SS was a large sedan that rocked a sleek, aerodynamic design. This version of the Impala remained in production until 1996.
Four years after production, the Impala once again made a return, this time for good. In its eighth generation, the revamped Impala (based on the Chevrolet Lumina) boasts two V6 engine options, and a third supercharged V6 option is available starting in the 2004 model year. In addition to a complete redesign, upscale features are available in the eighth-generation models including heated seats, Chevrolet’s OnStar system, keyless entry and more.
The Chevrolet Impala’s ninth generation continues to push it into the modern era, offering more engine options, luxurious interiors and improved safety and performance. 2006 brings back the V8 engine option (unavailable in the previous generation), and new trims are introduced, including the upscale LTZ model that features leather upholstery and wood trim in the cabin.
The SS model also remained as the performance version of the Impala. The 2007 Impala features a FlexFuel V6 engine choice and a boost in technology including available navigation and XM Satellite Radio. The 2012 Impala is available with optional Bluetooth in addition to a six-speed automatic transmission offered in all models. The 2013 Impala offers tech-forward features like iPod and USB ports.
Along with a new design, the 2014 Impala has excellent standard features like 18-inch wheels, HD headlights, three engine options, a touchscreen display and improved safety in all trims as well as optional features like adaptive cruise control and a backup camera.
The 2016 Impala offers a new color palette, updated trim options, wireless charging and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2018 Impala brings even more upgrades, including a standard rearview camera and keyless ignition (previously not available in all trims).
In 2019, Chevrolet continues to step up its game for its iconic ride. The full-size sedan’s luxurious interior, eight-inch touchscreen display, excellent performance (thanks to either the 2.5-liter ECOTEC four-cylinder or 3.6-liter V6 engine) and cutting-edge technology options like available 4G LTE connectivity and wireless smartphone charging, make the Chevrolet Impala a consistently excellent option.
