Quality Toyota RAV4 Models in Cleveland, TN
The RAV4 made its debut in 1994 in Japan and Europe. It rolled onto U.S. lots in late 1995 as one of the first compact crossover SUVs in existence. Touted as a versatile and fun to drive feat in Japanese engineering, the RAV4 fit a niche for drivers who want the increased cargo space provided by SUVs while maintaining the superior maneuverability and improved fuel economy typically only found in compact cars. This combination of functionality, practicality, and efficiency has proven to be a winning combination as the RAV4 has remained one of the most popular cars on the road for the past few decades, with over ten million since its inception.
Brief History of the Toyota RAV4
The RAV4’s name is a contraction of Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive. The RAV4 is one of, if not, the first car to bridge the gap between off-road vehicles and traditional passenger vehicles. The first generation RAV4 was released in the U.S. in 1995 and entered its fifth generation in 2018.
Currently, the RAV4 comes in six traditional engine trims as well as four hybrid options. The 2020 RAV4 ranges in price from $25,950* to $36,880*. While the latest iteration has added a number of modern luxuries, the RAV4 still remains true to its rugged and sporty roots.
Released in Japan in May of 1994 then the US in early 1995, the RAV4 entered the market with the hopes of bridging the gap between off-road capable vehicles and everyday drivers, and it accomplished just that. With a short, easily maneuverable body combined with the heightened ground clearance typically reserved for SUVs, the first generation RAV4 is definitely guilty of turning more than a few heads with its undeniably unique look.
When the second generation RAV4 debuted, it entered the field with much more competition than the first generation model. Despite making the vehicle longer and wider, the second generation did not gain any noticeable weight or lose any of its efficiency or handling capabilities.
In 2015, the fourth generation RAV4 received a major facelift. This facelift included redesigned LED front and rear lamps, updated speedometer dials, and a full color TFT multi information display. Along with these improvements, Toyota also began expanding its hybrid offerings for the RAV4.
The third generation RAV4 introduced an electric power steering system to its larger, more mature frame. This more robust body made the RAV4 safer and quieter than ever before. The third generation RAV4 also offered drivers its widest range of engine options yet, spanning from a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder to a 3.5-liter V6. All RAV4 models during this time benefitted from Toyota’s Star Safety System and became Toyota’s top-selling SUV for the first time in its existence.
The fourth generation RAV4 continued to get longer and larger but maintained its top-tier maneuverability thanks to the intelligent Dynamic Torque Control System, which offered two new functions: sport driving mode and cornering control. This improved design featured a rear liftgate, as opposed to the side-opening rear door, the spare tire was also no longer located on the rear door.
In 2004, vehicle stability control was made standard on all it’s RAV4 trims. The second generation also received an engine upgrade from a 2.0-liter to a 2.4-liter engine. This change ratcheted up the RAV4’s efficiency value.
The fifth generation RAV4 boasts improvements in comfort, efficiency, performance, and technology. With stronger horsepower and improved fuel economy accompanied by Apple CarPlay® and Amazon Alexa integrations, as well as Wifi hotspot capabilities, and a larger display screen with a JBL Audio system.
What’s New for 2020?
The RAV4 did not receive many major upgrades for 2020, however, it does feature a few improvements. These improvements include the introduction of the TRD Off-Road trim, Android Auto™ integrations, a power driver’s seat, and enhanced interior package options.
